Indians Defeat Lancers 14-0 on Homecoming Night

The Indians will host Brookfield Central tonight at Schumann Stadium. With a win, and a little help from their rivals, the team could earn a share of the conference title.

The Indians did what they had to do Friday to earn a slice of the Greater Metro Conference title, but it wasn't meant to be.

The Indians blanked the Brookfield Central Lancers 14-0 to finish the year 6-1 in conference play and 7-1 overall.

The Indians needed some help from an unlikely ally in the Sussex Hamilton Chargers in order to grab a share of the title. However, Brookfield East pulled out a win against Sussex 14-13 in overtime and remained undefeated to capture sole possesion of the Greater Metro crown. Had the Chargers won, it would have forced a three-way tie for first place. Regardless, Falls sent the fans home happy on Homecoming night.

Falls running back Cole Hernikl scored the first points of the game on a 7-yard rush. The Indians relied heavily on their quarterback Adam Vechart for most of their yards on the ground in the first half. He rushed for a touchdown on a keeper with 1:53 remaining in the second. The score was set up after the Lancers fumbled and Indians defensive lineman DeShawn Pullen recovered it on the Lancer 11 yard line.

After the ensuing kick off, Lancer quarterback Jack Knetter threw an interception to Falls defensive back Mike VanAlstyne on the team’s first play from scrimmage. and The Indians looked to deal the lancers a crushing blow with 18 second remaining in the half, but Lancer defensive back Terry Wallen returned the favor and intercepted Adam Vechart’s pass in the end zone.

The teams locked horns and remained scoreless after turnover-laden second half. Both defenses also stiffened and kept each other out of the end zone.
