Girls Rugby Team Will Battle For State Title Sunday

Team has dominated the season, and are one win away from a perfect season and a state title.

When the Menomonee Falls girls rugby team joined the league in 2009, they were restricted to playing exhibition games to prove they had the stuff to stick around.

Since then, they’ve more than proven they have what it takes to be a powerhouse in the league, and are scrumming for their first state title in the team’s short history. They’ll lock shoulders with the Oak Creek Knights at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Naga-Waukee Park in Delafield.

The Indians have more than proven that their team is a force to reckon with in Division II girls rugby – they’ve displayed their dominance. The girls haven’t trailed a single moment of their 6-game season, and they’ve been scored on just once. To reach the championship game, the Indians trounced Oak Creek’s “B” team 83-0 Sunday.

“We started the season with a good group of veterans, and mixed in some good younger athletes,” said head coach Dan Zeroth. “Right now, our athletes have been the difference in the games we’ve played. One or two better athletes can be a difference maker.”

Zeroth said setting the tone early with intense play will be they key to hoisting the championship trophy Saturday. The Indians defeated the Knights 23-0 earlier in the season.

“They know us, we know them. The winner will be the team that scores first and puts the pressure on the defense,” Zeroth said.
