What would Fred Astaire think of Dancing with the Stars?

Week 5 of Dancing with the Stars had a surprise elimination, read on for more details…

The theme for tonight’s show was memorable years and the stars explained the events behind their choosing.

Opening the show tonight was Christina Milian dancing the Cha Cha Cha. This was a lively, energetic performance and got good reviews from the judges. I would have liked to have seen more hip action to show the rhythm I know she possesses.

Jack Osbourne then danced a very emotional Waltz that had an effortless charm about it. The smooth style dances tend to suit Jack and he displayed a good frame and ease of movement. I would like to see a little more performance in his next routine as that adds entertainment value and in television and on this show especially it is all about entertainment.

Leah Rimini danced a contemporary number that symbolized her taking control of her life. She didn’t look as comfortable in this style as she had in previous episodes. She is quick to say she is not a dancer but she shouldn’t diminish the improvement she has made already. When you decide to compete in a dance competition you have to put hesitation and reservations behind you and throw caution to the wind.

One of the early favorites for the mirror ball trophy Corbin Bleu was challenged with performing the Foxtrot. This is a dance that requires style, grace as well as a good frame and great movement. Corbin has some great attributes that demand your attention and I look forward to seeing him improve his leg and foot action.

Snooki then followed with a Jazz number. This certainly didn’t have many Jazz elements but did have good side by side work along with high energy and some great lifts and tricks. This was easily one of her best performances to date and her scores reflected that.

Brant Daughtry performed a contemporary number next and even thought it as emotionally charged I found the tone of the dance didn’t relate to the music that well. Their dancing was very hard and aggressive and I would have liked to see more extension and filling out of the music. He is a good dancer I just liked his other performances more.

Amber Riley continues to divide opinion between the judges, this time over her Foxtrot. This had more ‘stage’ elements to it rather than a traditional Foxtrot which is all about partnership and quality of movement. Performance wise she executed it very well and continues to adapt to the different character of the dances week after week. I think Fred Astaire himself would have approved of this Foxtrot!

Dancing a ‘saved by the bell’ themed Jive was Elizabeth. She would have received a higher score if she hadn’t been tasked with dancing choreography that was beyond her experience level. The Jive is a tremendously fast dance and when you attempt the beginning she did with multiple spins it just shows what she hasn’t yet learnt how to do. After the beginning I liked the dance and it was fun but moving forward the choreography has to be designed to show her attribute off.

Eliminated this night was Christina Milian despite having the highest judges score the previous week. She got the first ‘10” of this season from a Judge for her Cha Cha. I can only assume she didn’t have a huge support base who were voting for her as she still deserved to be on the show.
