Week 4 of Dancing With The Stars, the competition is hotting up

Discover how a Professional Dancer views ABC's Dancing With The Stars giving unique insight into the performances of all the celebrities

Week 4 of Dancing With The Stars is Here and this weeks theme was “the best year of your life”

Bachelor Sean opened the show with a Viennese Waltz. This was a soft romantic song that highlighted Seans lack of experience in a technically difficult to dance. He did demonstrate good posture and frame but his timing could have been more precise. I like his attitude and even though he didn’t get the scores he would have wanted it was overall a pleasing performance.

Boxer Victor came out swinging with a rock themed Paso Doble. His leg and foot action was strong but the dance has to show contrast by making sure everything doesn’t look tense. More rotational action through his core and torso would have given this performance more dimension and musicality. This dance was a good fit for a champion boxer.

Going on the offense next was Superbowl winner Jacoby Jones. The dance he was tasked with performing was the Foxtrot which is a dance that requires a light, fun action paired with good technique and a Broadway style performance. Jacoby showed that he has been working on many of these facets. My only criticism of him would be his posture as I have mentioned previously he has a tendency to ‘dance down’ to Karina which makes him look weak. For a rough and tough NFL star he has remarkably soft and expressive arms.

Olympic Gymnast Ali danced a contemporary number with partner Mark Balls. This was a very deep emotional performance and the biggest compliment I can give is that Ali looked natural and comfortable during this number. For someone of such a young age this was a performance that was beyond her years. Her scores are the highest of the season so far.

Tonight Comedian Andy Dick stopped me laughing and made me want to watch him tonight for the right reasons – good dancing! This was by far his best dance and he made Carri Anne cry. All of the stars were tasked tonight to perform a solo and his was very good showing timing, posture and frame that was much improved from previous weeks.

TV star Zendaya was inspired by Beyonce to dance the Samba. I didn’t care for the choice of outfit as in no way did it enhance her performance. She was lacking some of the Samba characteristics but gave an accomplished performance and danced with comfort and confidence. The Samba is unique because of the ‘pulse’ action which makes it more dynamic than some of the other rhythm dances.

Ingo Rademacher danced Viennese Waltz and was hoping to leave the judges in a spin with this performance. As a dancer of twenty years I hope I notice things that most 'non-dancers’ wouldn’t. I was drawn to Ingo’s footwork and how he used his feet to enhance his movement and smooth out his dancing. He need to lower his shoulders and roll them back a little to stop his frame looking claustrophobic. This number had emotion and was well received from the judges.

D.L. Hughley was hoping to not raise any laughs this evening with his Foxtrot. Revealing his inner ‘raunch’ and he has improved again this week. He is not one of the best dancers for sure but all you can ask is for improvement from your previous performance. He looked like he was actually having fun and that is what dancing is about. Call a doctor, D.L. got his highest scores of the competition!

Hoping to hit the high notes with her Rumba was Kellie Pickler. This was a sentimental song for Kellie and was sung by her husband. For me I felt she was a little inhibited, none of her hip movements flowed and I was surprised as I expected more based on last weeks performance. She had good lines and flexibility but the idea of rhythm dances is moving your body to music to express your feelings.

Leaving it until the last minute before deciding whether to dance or not was real housewife Lisa Vanderpump. Despite her illness Lisa did come out and give it her best shot. Her number was hampered by the lack of practice and they upset Carri Anne by doing a lift. This Cha cha cha was danced off time in places and didn’t have the settling action into the floor. I have a feeling they will require assistance from the audience to stay in the show.
