Hundreds Seize Their Spots During Independence Day 'Land Grab'

The annual "Land Grab" is a tradition that runs decades deep for many Menomonee Falls families. On Tuesday, residents waited throughout the day to ensure they had the best view of the fireworks and the parade.

The right-of-way along Appleton Avenue has temporarily been transformed from the public sphere. Until Wednesday night, Falls' busiest corridor will resemble a contiguous patchwork of territories defined only by the police tape and string used to establish boundaries.

It was the annual "Land Grab" for the best vantage points of the Fourth of July parade and fireworks in the village. The tradition reaches decades back in some families, and many land-grabbing veterans set up makeshift camps along the sidewalk for more than 12 hours to ensure they got their spot.

The parade kicks off at 7 p.m. Wednesday near Pilgrim Road and Appleton Avenue in Menomonee Falls. It will continue to Menomonee Falls High School, and fireworks will be lit off at dusk.
