UPDATED Photo Gallery: Falls' Dream Season Ends Early

Oconomowoc comes back from 3-0 deficit to stun top-seeded Indians 5-4.

A 3-0 lead melted away Tuesday and top-seeded Menomonee Falls dropped a stunning 5-4 decision to Oconomowoc in the WIAA Division 1 softball sectional.

The Indians (19-2) had won 18 consecutive games since a 2-1 loss to West Allis Hale early in the season.

They led 1-0 in the third when all-state catcher Hailey Wilson dislocated her left thumb while behind the plate. Wilson left the game in pain, and later was driven from the field in a van after taking ill. Coach Wendy Wolff said x-rays were inconclusive, but the loss of Wilson's booming bat was the start of bad things to come for Falls.

While Wilson was in the dugout being attended to, Menomonee Falls tacked on two more runs in the home half of the third.

Oconomowoc tied the game with a three-run fourth and added two in the eighth. Wolff said Oconomowoc took advantage of some Menomonee Falls errors and received a solid effort from its pitcher.

Oconomowoc scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning off pitcher Nicole Zywiec; in the bottom half, all-state shortstop Hailey Mohrfeld hit an inside-the-park homer to pull the Indians within 5-4, but that was all they would get.

Mohrfeld had the solo homer and two hits for the Indians. Also with two hits were Maddie Eikenmeyer and Tabby Matovich. Zywiec struck out 15 batters in pitching all eight innings.

"(Tuesday's) loss in no way takes away what our athletes accomplished this year," Wolff wrote in an e-mail. "They are talented, but what's most impressive about them is their heart, their work ethic, their drive, their passion, their togetherness."

Mohrfeld and Wilson are both scheduled to play June 21 in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game in Stevens Point.
