Pals Wilson, Mohrfeld Earn All-Star Selections

Recent Falls graduates plan summer of fun before going off to college.

Hailey Mohrfeld and Hailey Wilson have been nearly inseparable since they met as fourth graders and discovered they had the same first name. And that friendship has grown through the years.

The two softball stars, recent graduates of Menomonee Falls High School, plan to hang out and play a little softball together this summer before embarking on the next phase of their lives.

“It was really nice to play with Hailey because she’s my best friend,” Mohrfeld said.  “On the softball field, I was more serious and Hailey’s funny and she helps me loosen up. She’s always been there for me and I just love hanging out with her.”

Mohrfeld and Wilson were selected to compete in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association Senior All-Star game  Tuesday in Stevens Point. Mohrfeld will play shortstop for the Division 1 Red Team. Wilson, unfortunately, won’t be able to play because of an arm injury she suffered against Oconomowoc in the sectional tournament. The catcher hopes to be ready to play in mid-July.

“I’m just really happy that we’re playing together this summer,” Wilson said. “A lot of our team was split up. After our last game, everyone was sad, but we said it was a good thing that we’re playing together this summer. We would be a mess right now.”

The two players expect to play with The Competitors, a softball team based in Greenfield that will play in several tournaments this summer.  Then the two will split up. Wilson will attend the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where she plans to major in business administration and try to make the softball team as a walk-on. Mohrfeld, recruited to play softball at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, wants to major in physical therapy.

The two players provided a bucket full of highlights this spring for the Indians, who finished 19-2 and shared the Greater Metro Conference title with West Allis Hale this season. The Indians had a big season at the plate, scoring at least 10 runs in 12 games this season.  The season ended on a disappointing note, a 5-4 loss to Oconomowoc in the sectional tournament.

In a four-year run that was full of highlights, the most memorable performance for the pair came during their sophomore year when Menomonee Falls advanced to the state tournament.

Falls, the top-seeded team entering the tournament, started its run with an 8-0 victory over Brookfield Central. The Indians then squeaked by Brookfield East, 1-0 and advanced to state with an 8-0 victory over Homestead. Wilson had a homer in the sectional final.

“That was my favorite experience, going to state,” Wilson said. “That night was crazy. Everyone ran out on the field, it was really cool experience.”

That week leading up to the tournament was particularly enjoyable for the Indians.

“We went up there (to state) the night before and we had a police escort up to a certain point,” Mohrfeld said. “Just to play there was just a great experience. It feels really nice to say that you made it to state.”

The season ended with an 8-0 loss to Appleton East in the quarterfinals at state.

The Indians advanced to the sectional both of the last two years, but came up short. But the good outweighed the bad, they both said.

“We had a fun season both years,” Mohrfeld said. “We didn’t finish as well as we would have liked, but we had a good time.”
