Indians Knocked Out By Kettle Moraine 56-45

Menomonee Falls just couldn't snag the lead.

The had their season come to an end with a 56-45 loss to Kettle Moraine in the WIAA Regionals.  The game was close throughout, but the Indians couldn't get over the hump and finish the game.

Both teams traded baskets in the opening quarter, before Kettle Moraine senior Becki Martin led the charge for the Lasers.  Martin scored eight of her 11 points in the opening quarter, as Kettle Moraine closed with a 6-0 run,  they took a 12-6 lead into the break.

Heading into the second quarter, the Indians tried to cut into their deficit, however it was a short lived effort. They merely traded baskets with the Lasers until senior Brittany Goldsworthy drained a three, and may have drained the hopes Menomonee Falls may have had.  Kettle Moraine was able to extend their lead to nine points at the half, 25-16.

Neither team was able to sustain a run of more than three possessions, however it would be Kettle Moraine who would benefit from those limited runs.  Junior Courtney Leister hit a three early in the third quarter to pad the lead out to 14 points at 32-18.  The Indians would match points from there to close the third quarter with a 39-26 deficit.

Their season was on the line beginning the fourth quarter, yet the Indians never seemed to play with any sense of urgency.  A steal and breakaway layup by junior Rachel Defnet, seemingly gave the Indians the momentum they needed to make a change.

Menomonee Falls coach Craig Amundson called a timeout after that. The Indians failed to put any pressure on Kettle Moraine in the back court. Without any real pressure, the Lasers were able to gain the front court and slowly drain time off of the clock.

Finally, the Lasers realized they had to do something in an effort to extend their season. They increased the back court pressure and fouled just to stop the clock.  Kettle Moraine still hit 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Senior Kelly Robinson paced the Laser attack with 15 points, while Becki Martin chipped in with 11.  The Indians were paced by sophomores Amber Bullock and Erin Crownover with eight points each.

The Indians ended their season with a record of 12-12.  Kettle Moraine advances to the WIAA sectionals where they will host rival Arrowhead on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday.  Tip off is at 8:15 p.m.
