Indians Drop State Softball Semifinal 2-1 to Westosha Central

Menomonee Falls took an early lead but was unable to hold it against once-beaten Westosha Central.

Menomonee Falls’ charge toward a state softball championship ran out of gas in Friday’s semifinals with a 2-1 loss to Westosha Central on Friday in Madison.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brittany Robinson led off with a single and later scored on a passed ball. But her base hit was the Indians’ last, as Sarah Fonk mowed them down from that point. Fonk walked just one hitter and struck out 13 to send the Falcons (21-1) into Saturday’s championship game against  Kenosha Bradford.

Indians sophomore pitcher Kelly Berglund, who went the distance in Thursday’s nine-inning quarterfinal win, gave up eight hits and struck out two on Friday. She surrendered a solo homer to Kayla Konwent in the third as Westosha tied the game. In the sixth, Westosha Central loaded the bases with two outs, and then Brittney Blazich slapped a single to center to score the winning run.
