Girls Basketball Team Enjoys Two-Game Winning Streak

Steady improvement pleases Falls coach Craig Amundson.

The Menomonee Falls girls are having a ball on the court these days. Even the practices are fun.

“The girls are really going at it in practice,” Falls coach Craig Amundson said. “They’re working hard and not complaining. It’s been really fun.”

The Indians will go into their next game on a two-game winning streak. Tuesday night’s home game against Sussex Hamilton has been postponed due to weather. They defeated Divine Savior Holy Angels 46-41 in overtime Tuesday and beat West Allis Hale 57-39 Friday night. Falls, which has won four of its last five games, improved to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in the Greater Metro Conference.

Leading Falls in recent weeks has been Rachel Defnet, who is averaging 8.5 points per game and playing solid overall for the Indians. She led Falls with 11 points.  She also had the unenviable assignment of guarding the Dashers’ talented guard-forward Maggie Novak, who scored 21 points in the game.

“What she does well for us is that she knows when to lead, when to follow and when to get out of the way,” Amundson said about Defnet. “She’s been playing good defense for us. She usually gets the toughest defensive assignment at the wing.”

Falls struggled against Hale in the early going, but shot 65 percent in the second half and rolled to victory. The Indians committed only 11 turnovers, their low for the season. Alex Poole scored 14 points and Defnet added 12 in the victory.

Going into 2011, Amundson was hoping his team would learn how to win. They’ve accomplished that goal.

“We’ve really improved a lot,” Amundson said. “We’ve been working hard in practice and we’re seeing the effects of that.”
