Falls' Kyle Schmidt Drafted by the United States Hockey League

Schmidt was selected in the 17th round by the Waterloo Black Hawks.

Menomonee Falls’ native Kyle Schmidt was one of eight Wisconsinites selected in Monday’s United States Hockey League entry draft.

The Waterloo Black Hawks of Iowa selected Schmidt in the 17th round, and he was the 245th pick overall, according to a news release from the team.

The USHL is the top junior hockey league in the United States. The league has 16 teams located throughout the Midwest. Teams consist of players who are 20 years of age and younger, and it is strcitly an amateur hockey league.

Schmidt is a right-handed shooter who played Forward for the Milwaukee Admirals Midget Majors division. In 67 games with the team, Schmidt led the team in points with 58. He scored 32 goals and notched 26 assists.

Schmidt was also one of five players in the Admirals Midget Major division who were invited to play in the North American Prospects Hockey League all-star game which was held in Topeka, Kansas earlier in May.

The draft was completed in two phases.  Each USHL team filled their protected list of veterans and draft picks up to 23 players.  After each team had reached that mark, the selections continued until all of the clubs had 30 protected players.
