Falls-Sussex Border Clash to Benefit Cancer Research

Though rivals on the court, both teams are coming together to raise funds for cancer research and awareness.

The Menomonee Falls Indians are primed to reignite the border war Friday at Menomonee Falls High School against Sussex Hamilton in a big Greater Metro Conference showdown. However, Friday's game is about more than just basketball.

Although they are rivals on the court, both teams are coming together Friday for a good cause. Falls Head Coach Dan Leffel and Chargers Head Coach Andy Cerroni are both teachers in the Falls school district, and they are turning Friday’s matchup into a “Coaches Versus Cancer” game.

Coaches Leffel and Cerroni will wear sneakers during the game and sell “Together We Can Beat Cancer” t-shirts for $10 to fans of both teams. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. The players have all purchased shirts, and will be wearing them for warm-ups.

The players will also don pink shoe laces to honor those who are currently battling the disease. Falls’ Superintendent Patricia Greco to remove breast cancer just over a month ago.

“We all know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer,” said Leffel. “I’m thankful to be a part of this fundraising effort so we can help further cancer research and someday find a cure.”

The Indians (9-8, 6-5 Greater Metro) are hot right now and have won five out of the last six games. The single loss was a two-point defeat on the road at Homestead High School. The Sussex Hamilton Chargers (10-9, 5-6 Greater Metro) are one game behind the Indians in the conference standings and are currently in fifth place.

The Chargers are also on a three-game winning streak. Something will have to give on Friday.

These two teams met earlier this season in Sussex, and the victory in front of the home crowd. This time, the Chargers will make the 7-mile trek to Falls in an attempt to sweep the season series. The Indians are looking for revenge.

T-shirts will be on sale throughout the evening (as supplies last).  There will also be donation buckets passed throughout the stands for those who wish to make an additional contribution.

The freshman tip off at 4:15 p.m., the junior varsity at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
