Wil-Kil Pest Control’s Pest of the Month: Mosquitos

What better way to welcome summer than with a barbeque or outdoor party!  As residents flock to the outdoors to start enjoying the warmer weather, it is important to remember that mosquitos love a party as much as the rest of us. 

Although they are most active at dawn and dusk, mosquitos can ruin tailgates, backyard get-togethers and parties on the patio in a matter of minutes, especially near wooded areas.  Not only are they a huge annoyance, but mosquitos are also known vectors of many diseases, including the West Nile Virus (WNV), posing a potential threat to local families.

Fortunately, there are a few simple actions homeowners can take to reclaim their yards this summer and kick those pesky mosquitos to the curb.

Mosquito Prevention Tips:

• Drain standing water regularly. Mosquitos only need about a half-inch to breed
  
  
• Dispose of discarded tires, cans or plastic containers left outside that may contain standing water
  
  
• Turn over plastic wading pools and wheel barrows when not in use
  
  
• Use effective mosquito repellent and apply according to the label instructions.  Spray with a repellent containing permethrin or DEET for extra protection
  
  
• If possible, avoid spending time outdoors during times of high mosquito activity – especially at dawn and dusk
  
  
• Inspect and repair all window screens to prevent mosquitos from entering the home
  
  
• Clean clogged roof gutters

Due to the potential danger associated with mosquito bites, it is important to remember that it is never too early for residents to begin protecting themselves, family members, backyards and pets from pests this summer. 

A few preventative measures can go a long way in the fight against mosquitos and other summer pests.
