Shady Lane Students Shatter Reading Goal

Students quickly surpass school-wide goal to read one million minutes, set their sights on two million.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Menomonee Falls Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Editor Carl Engelking.

School: Shady Lane Elementary

Accomplishment: Students shattered a school-wide goal to read a total of one million minutes this year, and are hitting the books to reach two million minutes.

Key to Awesomeness: Close to 400 students and staff kicked off the event during their annual Open House in September. The 400 students donned their "Gotta Keep Reading" t-shirts, and gathered on the playground and sang a song inspired by the Black Eyed Peas.

Students were encouraged to read 20 minutes every night to help reach a school-wide goal of one million minutes read.  Students and staff have been wearing their “Gotta Keep Reading” t-shirts on the 20th of every month, which was designated “Read an extra 20 on the 20th day.”

Shady Lane students have put their goal of one million minutes in their rearview mirror, and are setting their sights on the two million minute mark. Currently, students have read 1,166,432 minutes.

Congratulations to all the Shady Lane students, and good luck reaching two million minutes.
