Physical Education Waiver Nears Approval

The Menomonee Falls School Board will vote on a physical education waiver March 25 that would exempt student-athletes from one section of gym class.

The Menomonee Falls School Board took one last look at a physical education waiver Monday before the proposal heads for a vote at its next meeting.

Juniors and seniors at Menomonee Falls High School may have the chance to skip their final semester of gym class in order to take a core academic class like English, math, science, or health. However, the option is only open to students who have participated in 95 percent of events and practices of a district-sponsored or sanctioned sport.

Those activities include the major sports like football, basketball, track, soccer and wrestling - to name a few. However, sports like bowling, hockey, rugby and the ski team are also eligible for the exemption. Baseball players would likely apply the exception during the summer between their junior and senior year.

The board clarified that baseball season applies to the level in school a student was at the end of the year. There was some confusion since baseball season is in summer.

“The idea behind the waiver is to give students in their junior and senior years the flexibility to take rigorous academic courses that will propel students to greater success post-high school,” stated Curriculum Director Dr. Gary Kiltz in a memo.

Students would need to receive written consent from a parent and a coach to utilize the waiver. They must also submit a verification form confirming regular attendance at events and practices. Students would still need to take physical education in freshman and sophomore levels. Additionally, the student must not have violated that athletic code resulting in the suspension of more than a week of practice or two games.

The proposal was reviewed by the School Board on Monday, and will got for a vote on March 25.
