New Course Offerings Pack Summer School Classrooms

Over 400 students in grades 4K through 5 are already enrolled in the new Summer Learning Camps.

The is expanding their summer school program to include academic-focused enrichment Summer Learning Camps for students who want to learn more.

In addition to the regular summer school catch-up math and reading classes, students can enroll in enrichment classes to go above and beyond. All of the classes are taught by licensed teachers from Menomonee Falls and other school districts.

There was so much interest in the Hands-on Science camp that an additional section was added this summer. Campers will roll up their sleeves and get down and dirty to investigate many areas of the world of science. They will be able to question, observe, predict, estimate, and experiment during this program.

“In summer classes students can focus on one or two activities in a hands-on, healthy learning environment,” said Superintendent Dr. Keith Marty.

In previous years, the summer school program focused on credit make-up and catch-up classes.  This year, the school district is expanding their offerings for 4K through fifth grades to include enrichment programs in a variety of interesting topics such as foreign languages, physical education, technology, space, hands-on science, arts and crafts, and readers/writers camps.

Kathy Myles, the director of teaching, learning and assessment, researched other local school districts with successful summer school programs to get ideas to format the new programs in Menomonee Falls.

“We pulled format ideas from the programs at Hartland Arrowhead, Sussex Hamilton, and Wauwatosa school districts,” Myles said.

Participating in these classes keeps the students learning throughout the summer, while having fun.

“With more parents working, including myself, it’s always great to have constructive activities for the kids to do during the summer to encourage learning and keep them engaged.  The summer is a great time for them to explore other interests,” Myles said.

Child care for students is offered through the recreation department’s programs Kid’s INC and Kid’s INC Jr.

The class listing can be found on page 22 of the CE & Rec Summer Activity Guide.

These Summer Learning Camps run July 11 through August 11 on Monday and Thursday mornings at . Participation is free, although registration is required.  Although registration is closed, some classes still have openings.  Call the Community Education & Recreation Department at (262) 255-8460 to inquire.
