Falls School Board President Shurilla Won't Seek Re-election

Dave Noshay, who is also up for election, announced he will run again.

School Board President Kathy Shurilla announced Monday afternoon she will not seek re-election this spring.

Shurilla made her announcement at the end of the regularly scheduled board meeting. Dave Noshay, whose term on the board also expires this spring, announced that he will run again.

"This last term has been kind of touch and go," she told the board. "I am really happy the way things are going in the school district."

Shurilla indicated the reason for her stepping down was personal.

"I was planning a resignation for last summer but when the events of the May contract erupted, I decided to stick it out," she said in an email.

The board was embroiled in controversy in May after it approved, three days after a tentative agreement was met with the district. Residents pleaded for the board to table the vote on the contract until more information could be gathered regarding the new contract.

Residents said they wanted time to review the contract, discuss and debate it.Β  They claimed the quick passage of the contract was an attempt to hoodwink the public.

This spring will mark about 13 years on the board for Shurilla.

Shurilla indicated several people have taken out papers to fill for candidacy. Candidates must have their nomination papers in by 5 p.m. Jan. 3 to get on the ballot for the April 3 election.

On the School Board, the president serves a three-year term and receives a compensation of $5,500 annually. Other board members receive $5,000.

Those interested in running for either position on the School Board can pick up filing papers from the district office, which is also located in Village Hall.

If more than two candidates file for any open position, a primary election will be held Feb. 21.
