Remembering September 11, 2001

It was the pivotal event of a generation, a single day of terror that forever changed our view of the world and totally redefined our country's approach to foreign policy.

It is hard to believe that a decade has already passed since the jarring events of the morning of September 11, 2001.  It was the pivotal event of a generation, a single day of terror that forever changed our view of the world and totally redefined our country’s approach to foreign policy – and will likely continue to do so for years to come.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 atrocities and remember all of those who gave their lives on that day, a number of local events will take place and I encourage you to attend at least one of them.  Here are just a few of the many commemorations taking place:

  • St. John’s Northwest Military Academy Field of Flags
    1101 Genesee St., Delafield
    Friday, September 9, 11:30 a.m.
  • 9/11 Memorial Dedication
    Lisbon Town Hall Park
    W234N8676 Woodside Rd., Lisbon
    Sunday, September 11, 12:30 p.m.
  • TosaFest 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
    Hart Park, Wauwatosa
    Saturday, September 10, 5:00 p.m.
  • 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
    U.S. Bank Center
    777 E. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee
    Sunday, September 11, 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
  • 9/11 Memorial Picnic
    Pewaukee Village Park
    Sunday, September 11, 2:00 p.m.

In addition to those who lost their lives ten years ago, September 11 is a good time to thank the U.S. Military veterans of the War on Terror who have bravely served in defense of our country – and to remember those who served and paid the ultimate price overseas in defense of our security here at home.  I look forward to attending some of these important events and I hope to see you there.

America's spirit was severely tested, but not broken, on September 11, 2001.  We realize that we are blessed to live in the world’s greatest society – a society of hardworking, family-oriented, kind and benevolent people that may be knocked down but will always rise back up.  Let’s commit ourselves to never forget the terrible events of that day a decade ago.
