Primary Election Preview: Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, businessman Eric Hovde, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and former congressman Mark Neumann square off in GOP primary for Wisconsin's open U.S. Senate seat. Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin is unopposed.

A highly contested GOP primary for the U.S. Senate nomination culminates Tuesday, with four Republicans vying for their party's nomination to take on Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin in the November general election.

The race has pitted the four GOP hopefuls against each other as they campaign for the six-year seat being vacated by Sen. Herb Kohl, who is retiring. The race has drawn national attention and endorsements because Republicans have a shot to wrestle the seat away from Democrats. Depending on outcomes in other states, the November election could help give the GOP control of the Senate.

  • LATEST:

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, businessman Eric Hovde, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and former congressman Mark Neumann are vying for their party's nomination in a race that appears to be up for grabs.

The shows Thompson favored by 28 percent of likely GOP voters, trailed by Hovde with 20 percent. But Wednesday's poll still reports 21 percent of voters undecided, so it could be anyone's race.

In the Democratic primary, which also will be on the ballot Tuesday, Baldwin is unopposed.

First of all, you don't pay taxes. Second, 90% of the proceeds go to huge corporations. Third, it isRead More very disingenuous for you to say that "80% of relief goes to President Obama's definition of middle-class taxpayers." In more appropriate words, that is a flat out LIE.

I agree with Nuitari (just this one time). I think I like the old version of the Patch MUCH better!

I agree too. But WISN likes to run the light version of news, only covering topics they feel weRead More should know about- or fits their agenda.

I think that the Patch is making a sincere effort to actually get into what Conservatives refer toRead More as “elite journalism.” What Conservatives mean by that is, people who read, write, present facts, and possess the ability to actually analyze written articles, and provide fact-based responses, rather than snarky, juvenile or scatological, religious dogma.
