Meijer Store Opposition Forms As Flier Circulates

Increased traffic, crime and noise some of the concerns listed on the flier.

Opposition to the planned 200,000-square-foot Meijer store has developed as a meeting of concerned residents was to be held Wednesday night, according to the Sussex Sun.

According to the paper, a flier was circulated this weekend throughout the village and the Town of Lisbon regarding the store to be located at Highways K and 164.

The flier indicated that residents are concerned with the large retailer coming to town because of the "impact will have on (the) quality of life because of increased traffic, increased crime, noisy semi-trucks making night deliveries, increased taxes to pay for roads, sewers and the need for additional police."

The paper also said the "flier points out that the proposed gas station and grocery/household goods stores are slated to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

The flier called for residents to come to the Pauline Haasss Library to voice their concerns with the plan.

The store, which plans to hire 200 to 250 employees, will be about 60 percent grocery and also consist of retail and pharmacy. The architectural review board reviewed the plans on Tuesday.

The company has about 200 stores in the Midwest and plans to open three other stores in the metro area.

A public hearing regarding modification of village ordinance involved in the project will be held on Oct. 23.

That seems like a great spot for a store like Meijer. I have been a major critic of the Village board, but this actually makes sense. If Meijers site survey and maketing teams think this is a viable location for a store we should welcome them with open arms. I understand some of the opposition ( I am sure most of the opposition was spawned by Pick n Save) But if Sussex is ever going to shake the "small town dead zone" image this is a good start.

I am in favor of the store and everything it has to offer. In regards to the Flabbergast comment- we love that place! Another GREAT addition to the Sussex & surrounding communities. There is nothing like that around- so clean and the kids love it! I would definitely not refer to it as 'useless'. Thank you Flabbergast! We visit you often!

Flabbergast useless? What planet are you living on? THe physical activity rather than vegging in front of a TV or computer is far from useless! In regards to Meijer store, great idea, great location. Jobs, jobs, and more jobs.

Pete; A Lot of long-timers in Sussex do Not want to shake the small town image. We want a quiet rural community. You are speaking for yourself.
