Teen Charged in Rueben Drive Burglaries

Waukesha man, 19, tells police he didn't need the money and he had no reason to break into the homes, according to the criminal complaint.

A Waukesha teen is accused of stealing laptops, alcohol, money, a video game system, video games, two guns, a hunting bow and a TV during a string of burglaries in September.

Derek M. Olson, 19, was charged Tuesday with three counts of burglary and one count of burglary-arming self with a dangerous weapon. He faces up to 32-1/2 years in prison and $125,000 in fines in convicted.

According to the complaint:

Four homes in the 2000 block of Rueben Drive were burglarized on Sept. 26. The residents of the homes reported missing seven shot glasses, laptops, alcohol, money, a video game system, video games, two guns, a hunting bow and a TV.

One of the victims came home for lunch when she noticed two backpacks in her backyard. When she looked at the backpacks, a man hiding behind some bushes took off running. Police later identified that man as Olson.

The woman found alcohol and two laptops belonging to her in the backpacks.

Another woman had her flower pot used to break her patio door window. She found a handwritten note stating “Sorry 4 breaking your door. Next time lock your door, dumb (expletive). BTW I didn’t take your stuff.”

Another residence had the weapons, video games and video game system stolen from them. And another witness told police she was home with her two grandchildren when someone entered the house and took a TV.

Olson admitted to the burglaries and turned over the weapons and the other items. He said he had money and he had no reason for burglarizing the homes. He also told police he left notes at the scene to make it appear the burglaries were personal.
