No Joke: Man Busted for Trying to Pass Off Rabbit Food as Marijuana

Menomonee Falls man faces prison time because customer was a police informant.

An 18-year-old Menomonee Falls man thought he was pulling a fast one when he tried to pass off a pound of rabbit food as marijuana and sell it for $950.

What he didn't know was that his customer was a police informant.

And now, Matthew S. Mason, is facing more than seven years in prison after being charged Thursday with multiple felonies.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court:

On Jan. 6, Mason and another man agreed to sell the informant one pound of marijuana for $950. The informant and Mason met at , N87W16471 Appleton Av., and performed the transaction, which prompted police officers to immediately arrest him.

Officers found a small bag of marijuana in Mason’s jeans pocket, along with a pipe in his car. However, he told police the pound of marijuana he just sold was rabbit food. He said he and the other man purchased the food at an area pet store, and both agreed to try and pass it off  as marijuana.

Mason is charged with with one count of imitation of a controlled substance; one count of maintaining a drug trafficking place; one count of possession of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana; and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted, he faces up to seven-and-a-half years in prison and $21,000 in fines.

Mason will appear in court April 11.
