Sussex Issues Burning Ban, Village Fireworks Still On

Sussex announces a burning ban, including a ban on residential fireworks which police say will be ‘strictly enforced.’

The has issued a burning ban for the village until further notice, citing severely dry conditions, warm temperatures and windy conditions.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently listing all of Southeastern Wisconsin on its Fire Danger Map, meaning campfires, fireworks and all forms of outside burning are strictly prohibited until the ban is lifted.

Also, with the Fourth of July fast approaching, the Sussex Fire Department is quick to remind residents specifically about fireworks.

“Although fireworks are often considered to be an important part of the Independence Day celebration, please keep in mind the danger to neighbors and surrounding natural areas during a drought” the department said in a statement. “Police will be monitoring the Village for illegal discharge of fireworks and will issue tickets to violators.”

However, even with the burning ban, the Village of Sussex still plans to hold its at . The Sussex Fire Department will be on site during the celebration to monitor the fireworks and conditions.

Stay tuned in to Sussex Patch until the actual date of the celebration, as the Fire Chief says the celebration is at his discretion and could still be canceled if conditions get worse.

I hope that when the police are monitoring the Village for the illegal discharge of fireworks, they also are on the lookout for individuals who celebrate the 4th by shooting guns into the air. The last couple of years, our neighborhood sounded a lot like Baghdad...

Hey, hey! No need to get hostile, Bill! Jane, you could be right, but I'm pretty sure all those noises are just from the different fireworks being set off. *BANG!*
