Updated: Four Students Brought BB Guns to Whitefish Bay High School

Police confiscated the guns from the three 12-year-olds and the 13-year-olds involved. District officials determined it was safe to hold regular classes today.

Four Whitefish Bay Middle School students could face juvenile charges for brandishing an unlocked BB gun and pellet gun at Whitefish Bay High School Wednesday.

After receiving a report from a middle school student at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, a Whitefish Bay police investigation found that four students displayed two weapons — an unloaded BB gun and an unloaded pellet gun — after school hours at Whitefish Bay High School on Wednesday, according to Whitefish Bay police.

One 13-year-old student and three 12-year-old students were questioned and released to their parents. All four students will be referred to Milwaukee County Children’s Court Center for review of charges that will include possession of a dangerous weapon on school premises, according to Whitefish Bay police. Police confiscated the BB gun and pellet gun on Thursday.

School officials learned of the potential security threat Thursday night, and worked with the police department throughout the night, according to a letter to school parents written by Superintendent Mary Gavigan. Working in conjunction with the police, it was determined Whitefish Bay schools were safe for student and staff attendance today.

Whitefish Bay police say this is an ongoing, active investigation, and the department continues to be in contact with personnel from the Whitefish Bay School District.

I think that calls for expulsion are just a knee jerk reaction inspired by anti-gun zealotry. It kind of reminds me of the news stories we occasionally see where a kid is suspended for pretending to shoot another kid at recess, using his hand as a gun. Certainly this situation needs to be addressed, but it should be addressed in a reasonable and logical fashion rather than a knee jerk overreaction...

This has only just begun -- names and details haven't even been released yet. This is the calm before the storm.

Bob McBride, smh, its so very sad. I wish people werent this way, but they are. Its easy to comment and judge, but not so easy to reveal their kids, or their own "sticky mistakes". Go sit in court in WFB, and see how many times WFB kids get off..... While I agree that kids should be kept out of harms way, but please consider ALL the dangers that are harmful, and way worse than a pellet gun. smh WFB is not all what its cracked up to be....
