Practice Fire Shifts to Real Fire Early Wednesday Morning

The Menomonee Falls Fire Department was busy last night, but had to extinguish a blaze that reignited in a practice home firefighters were using earlier in the night.

A practice fire in a vacant house on Menomonee Avenue turned reality early Wednesday morning in Menomonee Falls.

You may have heard the sirens during the night.

For the past few days the MFFD had been using a vacant house at N84W19712 Menomonee Ave. as a practice burn house. At roughly 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a final group of firefighters left the scene after a practice drill.

It was a busy night for the fire department, and they responded to seven storm-related calls in rapid succession after 8:30 p.m. Hevey said they were a bit stretched for personnel as the addressed each incident.

However, the practice fire reignited in the Menomonee Avenue home, and a call came in at about 1:27 a.m. Both the roof and second story were on fire when firefighters arrived on the scene – again.

“We didn’t do a good job overhauling the scene. I hate to say it but that’s the honest truth,” Hevey said.

Crews were on the scene until 5:30 a.m. extinguishing the blaze. The home is situated in an open field so no other residents’ homes were in immediate danger.
