Sussex's Associated Bank Burglarized; Suspect May Be at Large

Employees at the bank walked in on a burglar Saturday morning, and, according to sources, police have yet to locate the man. Sheriff's Department in mum on what happened.

Sussex’s , located at the corner of Main Street and Silver Spring Drive, was burglarized at about 8 a.m. Saturday, and employees apparently caught the man red-handed before he fled.

Kathy Kalis, owner of , located across the street from the bank, snapped photos of Waukesha County sheriff's deputies surrounding the building as they attempted to catch the man in the act.

However, the man may have slipped through their fingers.

“He was apparently in there when the two early girls working got to the bank,” said an onlooker, who asked to remain anonymous. “They just walked in on him. He got in the bank before they got to work, and he must have escaped on foot because police didn’t even find him. That’s all the cops on the scene told us.”

Sussex Patch reader Josh said he often listens to police scanners and can confirm the suspect did escape police. He emailed Patch saying police described the man as a black male in his 20s, wearing a black shirt and black pants with a red seam and black shoes. Police also reported the man with a silver hand gun and kitchen knife.

Avid Sussex Patch reader and blogger Rachel Sciortino told said she saw deputies surrounding the local business at 9:30 a.m., adding that a man told her that someone with a gun was running around near the bank.

When the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department was contacted for more information, a desk officer said, “I don't have any information on that whatsoever,” and transferred Patch to a voice mailbox.

Public Information Officer Steve Pederson said a news release will be sent out later this week.

This isn’t the first time Sussex’s Associated Bank has been targeted. Two local criminals were for attempting to rob the bank in March.

Several Sussex administrators live elsewhere and commute to their Village jobs. Would we have more effective "off hours" communication with the public if they were also village residents?

What's most frustrating about this is that Sheriff's Department has yet to release any information about this -- more than 24 hours later. I'm an editor with Patch and we have very few details on this, and have no idea if suspect has been apprehended.
