Milwaukee Man Charged in Accident Involving Falls Cop

Suspect, 46, had a blood alcohol level of 0.29 when he slammed his car into the rear of a squad car.

A 46-year-old Milwaukee man is facing numerous charges after he alledgedly causing injury to a police officer and two people in a vehicle in front of the squad.

Dennis L. Campbell was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Tuesday with three counts of operating while intoxicated and causing injury, and three counts of operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration and causing injury. If convicted, he faces up to six years in Waukesha County Jail and $12,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, at 11:55 p.m. July 12, MFPD officer Kyle Bucher was waiting behind a car at a red light on Good Hope Road and Pilgrim Road, when he noticed a minivan driven by Campbell coming up behind him that wasn’t stopping. Campbell’s van slammed into the squad car causing it to hit the car in front of it.

Another police officer dispatched to the accident interviewed Campbell, who told him he was headed home and “just lives around the corner” even though his listed address is in the 7000 block of North 91st. Street in Milwaukee.

Campbell was unable to pass a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level of 0.29 at the time of the accident, which is nearly four times the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin.

Bucher was taken to the hospital where he was treated for neck and back pain. Two people in the car in front of the squad also reported having neck and back pain from the accident.

Capt. Mark Waters said Bucher was back to work with the department on July 15. He did not suffer any serious injuries.

Campbell is free from jail on $500 cash bail while awaiting trial.
