At 12:50 a.m. June 16, 2011, a West Milwaukee police officer was on patrol in the 4400 block of West Burnham Street when he spotted four Grebe’s Bakery carts near a hole in the fence at Heiser Trailers. The officer called another police officer to come check out the scene and when he arrived 12 minutes later, three of the carts were loaded onto a pickup truck while the fourth was lying on the ground.

Police officers searched the business and found Bennett hiding under a trailer.

Bennett admitted to trying to steal the carts, saying he and a person named Mya had stolen bakery carts from the business two months prior to the incident and sold then for scrap metal.

Bennett said they got $120 per cart, however, according to Grebe’s officials, the carts are valued at $1,672 each.

He will make his initial appearance in court July 17.
