Drunken Driver Sends Cops a Smoke Signal

A drunken driver and a man using heroin were both arrested after sending police some blatant signs of mischief.

The smoke signal is one of the oldest forms of long distance communication, and was often used to tip off enemy attacks or let one's presence be known.

In Menomonee Falls, one woman certainly let her presence known, although her message was quickly received by police.

At roughly 4:20 a.m. May 29, police stopped a 58-year-old Menomonee Falls woman who was driving near Pilgrim Road and Main Street. However, her vehicle had only three functioning wheels and smoke was billowing out from under the hood. Before the officer could put on the squad's emergency lights, the woman stopped her vehicle in the left lane of traffic.

When the officer interviewed the woman, she had slurred speech, glossy eyes, and impaired reaction speeds. She subsequently failed a sobriety test. She was arrested for her first-offense OWI and driven to the hospital for a blood draw, which she refused.

When the officer searched her jacket, he found two Lorazepam tablets in her pocket. Lorazepam is a highly potent anti-anxiety drug, and the woman did not have a prescription. She was also cited with possession of illegally obtained prescription drugs.

Another Signal of Sorts

Sticking with the theme of signals, police also responded to a telltale sign of mischief just before midnight on May 29.

Police received a call that a man was screaming from an apartment on the W13000 block of Fond du Lac Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they could hear a man yelling and throwing objects from inside the apartment. The man gave officers consent to enter his apartment after they contacted him.

Out in plain sight were needles and a small amount of heroin. He was arrested for possesion of heroin and drug paraphernalia.
