Drug Collection Results Top Last Year's Drive

Across seven Waukesha County sites Saturday, volunteers collected 5,712 pounds of medications for proper disposal, keeping them away from drug abusers and public water supplies.

More than 5,700 pounds of drugs were collected for proper disposal Saturday across Waukesha County, for a four-year collection total of about 18,000 pounds, organizers say. 

The Menomonee Falls lead the way collecting the highest total of the seven sites.

The Waukesha County Drug Free Communities Coalition received 5,712 pounds of old, expired and unneeded medications across seven Waukesha County sites, coalition co-chair Sandra Schultz said Monday.

In 2011 a total of 4,596 pounds of medications .

"Keeping medications out of the hands of our youth and disposing of these medications in an environmentally safe way continues to be our goal," said Schultz, who heads the organization with former Waukesha Mayor Larry Nelson.

The collection sites collected these amounts Saturday ():

  • Brookfield — 767 lbs
  • Mukwonago — 827 lbs
  • Muskego — 545 lbs
  • Menomonee Falls — 1,287 lbs
  • Oconomowoc — 493 lbs
  • Pewaukee — 1,013 lbs
  • Waukesha — 783 lbs

In Brookfield, residents dropping off medications also donated a total of $811, which will be used to help pay the costs of the drive.

"The support from Brookfield PD, Public Works, Park and Rec, DEA and of course the numerous volunteers was invaluable to us," Schultz said.

The Waukesha County Drug Free Communities Coalition is a countywide network of individuals and organizations who are committed to the reduction of underage use of alcohol and drugs.

The coalition plans to hold another collection in 2013.
