Milwaukee Makes Another Move for Kohl's

Secret purchase is the latest development in the ongoing courtship of Kohl's.

It’s unclear where Kohl’s will ultimately locate its new headquarters, but it is quite clear that Menomonee Falls is facing increasing competition from Milwaukee to keep the company in the village.

According to a JSOnline report, a City of Milwaukee affiliate secretly purchased the vacant 7,900-square-foot Sydney Hih building, which is within the Park East redevelopment site in the city. The purchase could make the site easier for development to occur on that block.

The $769,000 purchase was funded by the Milwaukee Economic Development Corp., which includes Mayor Tom Barrett and other city officials and business executives on its board, according to the report.

The building purchase is the latest development in the ongoing courtship of the retail giant between Falls and Milwaukee. , Kohl’s CEO Kevin Mansell said the company is outgrowing its current headquarters location at N56W17000 Ridgewood Dr.

In August, Menomonee Falls in the Woodland Prime business park to incentivize the area for Kohl’s. Kohl’s headquarters would occupy 45 acres on the northwest portion of the taxing district. The village would front $23 million for infrastructure improvements on the site, and provide $18 million in grants and incentives for the project.

In December, that Milwaukee was also crafting a funding and incentive program of its own to bring Kohl's to the Park East corridor.

The future location of the Kohl's headquarters has been a tightly kept secret, and corporate leaders have been silent on where the company plans to go.
