Human Rights: Locally and Internationally

Given the obvious problems with human rights abroad with the "Arab Spring" revolutions, what can be done locally to help people internationally? What can be done locally to support human rights?

The “Arab Spring” revolutions in the Middle East have caused quite a stir in the past couple of months. Being a member of Amnesty International, I see now more than ever the atrocities that are going on from “virginity tests” in Tahrir Square, Egypt, the slaughter of Syrian protesters and Libya, and reporters caught in the mess of things in an attempt to open up the truth to the world. This is not to mention a plethora of other issues that are rocking our world, the poverty, corruption, and wars as well as the Joplin tornado.

About a week ago the MFHS Amnesty Club had its last meeting, and we discussed some of the things that we had done that year and even had Mrs. Shwalbach from Simple Hope come in, because we had done work with her, raising money to buy shoes for kids in Tanzania. She brought a poster to us as a gift, depicting the kids that had gotten the shoes and how happy they were.

It was very powerful, and it made me very proud, and made me want to be stronger and better next time. When I showed it to some of my friends at lunch however I got mixed responses. “Why should we worry about that when we have plenty of poverty here in the United States?” And I thought that this would make an interesting topic, as well as an opportunity.

Our role as a country and as individuals

Does the United States have an obligation to help other nations? If so, then how do we pick and choose countries we will and will not help? If the fight against Joseph Kony (Africa’s longest running war, which has killed and conscripted thousands of children, and displaced millions) is still going on, why haven’t we done anything? Does the United States government put the financial prospects of countries before the actual people of that country?

With regards to human rights locally, what can be done in the Falls area, or Milwaukee that a club can do to help others (soup kitchens, “I give a shirt”, etc)? What can be done locally that can help others internationally?

I understand this is kind of all over the place but I wanted to see what people thought about both American Foreign policy as well as Human rights at home and abroad. Thanks, and I hope to have some suggestions or comments below!
