Who Doesn't Like Wine?

Learning about wine should be fun, so why is it so complicated?

“A woman drove me to drink, and I'll be a son-of-a-gun but I never even wrote to thank her. “  ~ W. C. Fields

Who doesn’t like wine?  It brings people together….whether it be a girls night out, date night with your loved one, sitting on the patio on a warm evening, or catching up on your DVR while the kids aren’t home.  Wine is to be enjoyed.  It may be a bottle of red wine you have been storing in a dark corner of your basement for the past 10 years or the bottle of wine you grabbed from the store on your way home, but once you open it and take a sip, that is when the enjoyment starts.

I pour wine at a lot of tastings and I always hear at least one person say “I don’t like red wine” or “I only drink Chardonnays”.  I would like to come out and say “WHY?”, but instead always suggest they try something new and most of the time they are pleasantly surprised.  You know the saying our parents always told us, “How do you know you don’t like it if you haven’t tried it?” and that is also true with wine.  There are so many wines in the world to try, so the best we can do is to find a type we like and venture from there.  If you usually drink a Chardonnay, try a Viognier or Pinot Grigio.  If you want to learn to like red wines, start with a light red such as a Pinot Noir or Beaujolais.

There are many retailers that offer wine tastings and this is the best way to sample wines without buying a bottle and not be satisfied.  In the Entrée section of the Sunday paper, there is a section called “Out of the House” that lists upcoming food and wine events and I urge you try a few of these.   Get some other couples involved and make a night of it.  Most of these have minimal fees involved (some are no charge) but they are a great way to sample wines you may have never tried, and you will find most other people are there to do the same.  If you know of an upcoming wine event, email the Patch to have it put on the event calendar.
