Winter Taking A Toll on Your Mind and Body?

Relax tense muscles and improve your mood with a massage.

It's the middle of February, and we're in the midst of what could be the final stretch of winter. But months of cold weather, shoveling and slippery road conditions can impact moods and stress levels.

If the cold’s got you all tense and tight, a warm massage could let you escape from the crummy weather and stresses of daily life.

Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa at N56W15560 Silver Spring Drive has a variety of massage types to help recharge your body and spirit.

John Marco, COO of Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa suggests getting a massage to help deal with tough days, stress, and even depression.

“Massage can help if a person is experiencing situational or symptomatic depression,” said Marco.

Situational depression occurs when life stresses overwhelm someone, and they just need to take time out for themselves to reduce anxiety and stress.  It is not long lasting depression, but happens when they have series of bad days.

“Our most popular types of massage are the relaxation massage, deep tissue massage and our hot stone massage,” said Paulina Laskosky, local Menomonee Falls franchise owner of Hand & Stone.

These massages can benefit people who want to relax, de-stress, and soothe those achy muscles, as well as those who suffer from symptomatic depression.

“Symptomatic depression can cause physical and structural issues: the shoulders drop, the neck is down, and the abdominals are tightened affecting breathing.  When muscles are relaxed they are elongated, and when they are tense they shorten.  Hands on massage therapy can let them hold their head up, put their shoulders back, help them relax and breathe better.  That can help them feel stronger and come out of their depression,” said Marco.

Marco’s 25 years as a licensed Physical Therapist led him to found Hand & Stone in 2004 in Hamilton, New Jersey.

“I saw a need for available and affordable massage therapy,” said Marco.

Hand & Stone accepts walk-in clients or you can make a same day appointment, seven days a week.

They have an introductory offer with costs starting at $49.95 for a 50 minute relaxation or deep tissue massage or $69.95 for a hot stone massage.  Most clients sign up for the Lifestyle program, which offers a massage or facial every month.

Depending on your health care plan, massage costs may be covered by insurance with a doctor’s note or diagnosis, or can be paid using your FlexBen Health Savings Account.

Other therapists agree.

“Massage helps people relax and let the stresses go away,” said Bonnie Beeck, owner and massage therapist at Falls Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage at N88W15489 Main Street.

Falls Relaxation and Therapeutic Massage has been open in Menomonee Falls for 16 years.  Beeck specializes in CranioSacral Therapy and Lymphatic Drainage.

CranioSacral Therapy is a light touch massage that stimulates the nervous system from tailbone to brain, and Lymphatic Drainage focuses on directing lymph fluid to flush out of the body more efficiently using light touch on the lymph nodes,” said Beeck.

Massage therapy cost ranges from $35-$110 depending on the service, and the price list is on her website.
