Walmart Neighborhood Market Opens For Business

The largest portion of the major reconstruction project at the corner of Main Street and Pilgrim Road opened at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The wait is over.

For many passers-by on Pilgrim Road and Main Street the opening date of Falls' newest grocery store remained a mystery, and a point of curiosity. Well the veil has lifted, and the Walmart Neighborhood Market is now open for business. It officially fired up the registers at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The Neighborhood Market is a smaller-scale grocery store with an approximate size of 40,000 square feet. The store features a full grocery selection, deli and bakery section, a drive-through pharmacy and a one-hour photo department. There are about 182 stores like these across the country, and each employs about 95 people.

The Neighborhood Market is part of a broader redevelopment project, and three more buildings are still to be constructed over the next year. The Neighborhood Market replaced a vacant Piggly Wiggly location. Interstingly, Piggly Wiggly returned to Falls in summer and replaced the Sentry.

Hopefully this cleans up the Germantown Walmart.

The Silver Spring location did that.

I went in on opening day. Not a lot of parking...One comment right away: the store is FREEZING COLD as all of the coolers are open and without doors. Only the freezers have doors. That aside, I can see where it would be good to stop in for a gallon of milk $2.29 (Aldi is $2.00), Diet Coke is $1.25, same as larger W Mart. Frozen veggies are $1.99/lb (Woodman;s are $1.00/lb. Ground Chuck was $4.39/lb...I almost fell over. Same meat at Aldi and Woodman;s is nearer to $3.25/lb. The same W Mart deli pizzas that they have at the larger store are $1.00 to $2.00 more each at this location. Lunch Meat and Cheese are the same price. They DO have all 12 flavors of the Clear American sugar free and caffeine free clear, fruit flavored soda that I like. 1 liter is $.68. They also have cold beer and wine. Did not look at prices. LOTS of produce, much of it organic and pricey! There is a nice basic office supply, Rubbermaid, health & beauty that you would not find in regular grocery store. They also have a self checkout. If you know what you are doing, that is SO much faster than waiting in line. I will use this new store for a last-minute store - milk, soda, etc. I might as well drive up to the larger WM store to save on the things I DO get there. For meat, cereal, dairy and most staples, between Woodman's and Aldi, you can save at least 30% total by shopping with them. We save $600.00 per year just by getting milk at Aldi's rather than other stores. With 2 teen boys, every $ counts!

Or another bank.!

Thanks so much for the review! I'd heard the prices were not very good at one of the other locations. Sounds like the same here.

It's scary. Now the nice people from the hood won't have to drive so far with their ten kids, mama yelling at one of her baby's daddy, daughter's half naked, her boyfriend with his pants around his ankles and all pretending they are talking on cell phones that are not activated unless they are the goverment freebies. Walmart is not for Men Falls people. You figure it out. Lock your doors quiet little town. It's just the beginning of the New Northridge. Does anyone know where the low income housing is going to be built? Do we have the new bus line yet? WTF.
Tracy December 25, 2012 at 03:28 PM
All you racist people need to grow up. Its 2012 so get a clue. There are plenty of low income white people getting quest card too. I happen to be one of them working 2 jobs and still depend on those benefits every month. We not all born wit a silver soon in our mouth, some of us bust our butt to survive.

Never let the facts get in the way of the BS some people would have you believe. New "LANDMARK" building for a pizza shop !!! ==== Cost $$$$$ to the taxpayers.
