Purloin Studio Reopens

New location on Main Street now open for business.

and Gifts has been closed since Dec. 31 as they moved around the corner to Main Street. On Tuesday, owner Susan Corkum officially reopened Purloin at its new location.

Corkum said there are still a few artists that need to move their art and some detail work to finish up at the new studio, but she wanted to get the doors open for customers today. Corkum will hold the official grand opening celebration Feb. 19 during Chilly Fest.

"The move went as smoothly as we could have hoped," Corkum said. "Being here on Main Street will bring a lot more activity for us."

The new location is roughly twice the size of the old location at W164N8859 Mill St. The extra space allows more room for displaying artists, teaching and working.

The Main Street building was constructed in 1865, and is said to be the oldest standing building in downtown. The space formerly housed a TV repair business and was littered with junk and electronics parts. It about took four months just to empty before the move.

Although the move was a needed upgrade in space, Corkum hopes it will be the last time she needs to move.

"I'm glad it's over though," Corkum said. "It's an exhausting process getting everything put in."

Brookfield artist, Janet Roberts, will be displaying her art collection from Feb. 1 to March 31 as part of Purloin's Visiting Artist Series. Roberts specializes in painting figures from old photos onto vintage fabric and wallpaper.
