Planet Fitness Making Progress

Village leaders are working with the developer to fulfill several requirements before the fitness center can occupy the former Salvation Army space.

With news that another gym may open along County Line Road in Menomonee Falls, murmurs about Planet Fitness were once again reignited as fitness centers became a topic of conversation once again.

Well, Planet Fitness is still pushing forward with village officials to keep the project moving forward. Recently a contractor submitted plans and a building permit for the 24-hour fitness center, which will occupy the former Salvation Army location.

Somerstone, LLC is under contract to purchase Colonial Plaza along Appleton Avenue. Somerstone is inching ever closer to closing on the real estate transaction. The company has a two-phase plan to redevelop the retail center, starting with the northern portion that includes the former Salvation Army. According to an application with the village, Somerstone plans to invest $1 million into improvements to the strip mall.

In July, Planet Fitness received a permit to utilize the space for a fitness center. However, Somerstone must submit a development agreement to the village before Planet Fitness can occupy the space.

Village leaders wanted a development agreement forged to ensure plans were in place to fix-up the second half of Colonial Plaza. When Somerstone initially submitted its proposal, it didn't clearly state what the second phase of the project would entail. The village is working with Somerstone to complete this requirement.

It looks like the southern half of Colonial Plaza could be razed, and apartments or condominiums built in its place. However, official plans have yet to be submitted to the village.
