Bakery Proposal Passes Village's Smell Test

If the wind is right, something much sweeter will be wafting through the air in Menomonee Falls near Westbrook Crossing and Main Street.

There’s good news for residents that catch a whiff of the landfill near the northeast portion of the village. Now, you may still smell landfill, but with a lovely hint of baked goods in the near future if the winds of change are right.

A proposal to construct a received the green light from the Falls Plan Commission Tuesday. Waukesha-based Angelic Bakehouse owns the bakery, and the new facility will house its administrative, bakery, warehousing, and shipping functions.

The building will also have a small retail portion for walk-in customers.

The facility far south from the landfill, but when the winds blow from the north you'll catch whiffs of baking bread.

“I’m not sure it will overwhelm the neighbor to the north (the landfill), but it does smell damn good in there,” said Kevin Wahlgren, a representative for JMJ RE Acquisition LLC., the developer of the project.

The facility would be constructed in the Westbrook Business Park on the west side of Westbrook Crossing just south of Main Street. Once the building is complete, it likely won’t be long before the company expands again.

However, business owner James Marino told the The Business Journal on Feb. 3 that Falls is under consideration, but a final decision has not been made. They are still looking at other potential locations.

“They are in a position where they literally cannot take anymore business.  They are in a rush to get this started,” Wahlgren said.

Angelic will add 29 jobs in the area, but the company plans to expand its facilities rapidly and reach 100 employees within three years. Angelic was formerly titled Cybro Inc., but the owners changed the name of the company late in January.

James and Jenny purchased the bakery in 2009. Two brothers had founded the company in 1969. Angelic supplies rolls, buns, crusts, and bread to Whole Food outlets in the Midwest and other Milwaukee-area grocers.

Hi - new to commenting on this board but grew up and have owned a home in the Falls for many years and just had to say something on this... The bakery won't help the smell. The smell is horrible - I don't know how people that live on that end of the Falls put up with it. How do you look for a car at EVS or Boucher without feeling like you are going to get sick? Or visit St. Mary's cemetary like I do? I drive through it on Main St/Brown Deer Rd. quite often and it should be embarrassing to the Falls to have this. However, I really don't see much about it. How does Waste Mgt get away with that?

As long as we give them corporate welfare I support it. Giving money to anyone but corporations is immoral.
