Lepper Dam Island Will Have Occupants Next Week

Landscapers will begin installing new foliage next week to give the prominent island a new look.

Landscapers will occupy the island that fronts Lepper Dam next week as they install new foliage to spruce up the prominent landmass in downtown Menomonee Falls.

Right now, the rocky island looks barren because landscapers applied a treatment to kill the weeds that had taken over its surface. Community Development Director Matt Carran said passers-by will see a crane on the site Tuesday and Wednesday as a crew of two or three workers plant the shrubs and trees.

The island will feature some ornamental trees, evergreens, perennial plants and shrubs. Plants were selected so that something would be blooming in all seasons. In addition to the plants, LED lights will also be installed to light the plantings and the waterfall.

The village contracted Johnson’s Nursery to complete the project, and Director of Carran said the project will cost the about $40,000.

Carran said a maintenance plan will be developed by the village to ensure the landscaping thrives and is well cared for. He said it will take about two years before the plantings fill out and reflect the rendering submitted by the landscaper. Β
