Cops and Kids Connect Over a Few Frames

Menomonee Falls police officers went to Village Bowl on their free time to share some high-fives and strikes with local kids.

Sometimes police officers can be a little intimidating for kids when they are in full uniform and in the line of duty. But a unique program seeks to break down those barriers.

Former Pewaukee police officer Bob Kraemer started the nonprofit organization, Cops and Kids Foundation, in 2010 with the hopes of painting officers in a new light. His foundation organizes laid-back, fun events with officers and the community like bowling and fishing in Menomonee Falls, Waterford, Milwaukee and Waukesha.

On Wednesday, roughly 30 local kids were enjoying a few hours on the lanes at Village Bowl.

"When I was a police officer I found that there was a disconnect between officers, the kids and parents in the community," Kraemer said. "So we started programs to bring the community and law enforcement together. And the best way to do that is in a non-enforcement situation."

Kraemer said the only perceptions kids sometimes have of officers is when their parents are getting traffic tickets, citations or are in domestic violence situations.

"This way, the kids can see their officers off duty and not in uniform. They are dressed down and laid back. It breaks down a lot of barriers. We hope that builds a rapport with officers, and they get to know them on a first name basis. When there are issues in the community, they'll feel comfortable going to police."

Kohl's Cares was out at Village Bowl Wednesday donating time to help with the event. Kohl's will donate $500 to Cops and Kids. The Falls police department is also working with the foundation to put together a $4,000 grant to organize future events in Menomonee Falls.
