Walmart Eyeing a Second Store in Menomonee Falls

Walmart consultants presented plans to residents for another neighborhood market - this time at Pilgrim and Lisbon roads.

Plans are in their infancy, but Gatlin Development apparently has its eyes set on building a second neighborhood market further south in Menomonee Falls at Pilgrim and Lisbon roads.

Walmart consultants hosted a neighborhood meeting Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the to present revised plans for a 41,000-square-foot Walmart Neighborhood Market on the southern border of the village.

Gatlin already is moving forward with a Neighborhood Market on the corner of Pilgrim Road and Main Street. Construction on that site is expected to begin in fall.

Falls resident Joyce Larson was among the 25 neighbors who attended the meeting, and said about eight Walmart representatives were on hand. According to the invitation sent out by Walmart, it was a chance for residents to get "firsthand information" about the new proposal.

“They seem to be succeeding in keeping it as quiet as they can,” Larson said in an e-mail to Menomonee Falls Patch.

In January, Walmart developer Gatlin Development to request a rezoning of 25 acres of undeveloped land at the northwest corner of Pilgrim and Lisbon roads. The initial proposal called for an 115,000-square-foot supercenter at that corner.

However, the developer ran into for the plan when their rezoning request went to a public hearing. Hundreds of residents attended the meeting Jan. 4 to voice their displeasure with the plan. Trustee Michael McDonald said a large-scale proposal like a supercenter would “never fly on that spot” during the meeting.

As a result of that opposition, the developer in February after submitting a letter to the village.

“Gatlin remains interested in developing this site, but will seek municipal permitting when specific plans have been honed," stated Gatlin attorney Debbie Tomczyk in the letter.

On Friday, Community Development Director Matt Carran said the village has yet to receive a proposal from Gatlin for the Pilgrim and Lisbon road location.

A spokeswoman for Walmart did not return a phone call seeking comment Friday.
